The Water Tentacle is a magical sentient being created by the effects of the full moon waterfall with the moon pool on Mako Island. The tentacle appeared during ever full moon, having been activated by the impending arrival of the Comet Eva as a way to warn the mermaids of its potential collision with Earth.

The tentacle first appeared in the episode "The Awakening", when Cleo was in her bathroom. The water tentacle came up the drain pipe and out of her bath. It violently collided with the mirror she was gazing into and broke the glass. Across town, another tentacle came out of a water jug in Rikki's office, but it was interrupted by a knock on her door. Over at Mako Island, Will Benjamin accidentally witnessed the powerful mystical force on Mako Island. He was captivated by the creature and reached out to it. He wanted to touch it. The tentacle paused then reared back and struck him in the chest, which knocked him unconscious. It took off through the water and erupted out near Rikki's Café, where it captured Rikki Chadwick. Horrified, Rikki's friend Cleo Sertori and Isabella Hartley dove into the water after Rikki. They sped to the Moon Pool where they used their combined powers to save Rikki and temporarily destroy the tentacle.
In "Kidnapped," the mermaids prepared for their first full moon as a trio and planned to stay at Cleo's house. They plugged the faucets and turned off the water main just in case. As the full moon rose, Cleo, Rikki, and Lewis could hear the pipes strain as the water tentacle began to take shape in the moon pool. Bella, who was outside, was kidnapped by the water tentacle and taken to Mako Island. When she arrived in the Moon Pool, the water tentacle turned Bella into water. However, Rikki and Cleo manage to save her using Cleo's powers. Bella wanted to go back into the water as the process didn't hurt. She felt panic at first but then peace, like she belonged there.
In "The Dark Side," the mermaids made a plan to stay at Rikki's Café where they could block off all water from attacking them. Unfortunately, Zane's selfishness ruined the girls evening when he allowed his friends into the cafe. Fed up with Zane and mad at the situation, Rikki took off to Mako to confront the tentacle and destroy it herself. Will tried to stop her, but his attempt to "protect her" just made her angrier. She faced-off with the tentacle. She egged it on, prepared to use her powers, only for the creature to approach her with a mesmerizing glow to its forehead. She relaxed in its presence until Will arrived, worried about her. The tentacle attacked Will, but Rikki ordered it to stop and it did. The moon passed over the moon pool and the tentacle gave a cry before it was sucked back into the water. Bella swam into the moon pool seconds later, which prompted an emotional Rikki to lie that Will had saved her, not the other way around. Rikki made Will promise not to tell the others about what happened with the tentacle or the connection she had with it.
In "A Magnetic Attraction," Rikki's connection to the tentacle deepened as she spent more time at Mako, inside the moon pool. She grew distant from her friends and overprotective of the island. The bond she shared with it strengthened and grew her powers. Because of her change in attitude and the girls worry, Will told them what really happened with the tentacle. He explained her connection to the energized water; it was like she controlled it, listened to her, and obeyed her.
The Water Tentacle was revealed to be friendly and it gave the Mermaids a message about a Comet Eva. The Comet entered into the Solar System on February 7th, which is also the same day the water tentacle activated.

In early 1700s, an Irish town witnessed a comet hurtling toward Earth and believed it to be the end of the world. A mermaid, Eva, told them to remain calm and entered the water off the cliffs. Eva used her magic to create the original Tower of Light. It collided with the comet and sent it back into the atmosphere. The people were spared, though Eva was never seen again.
